How to Count Words and Characters
Whether a piece of text is “short enough” depends on the unit a destination actually measures. This guide explains word and character totals, the less obvious effects of whitespace and emoji, and a repeatable way to meet a limit without weakening your message.
Start With the Rule, Not the Draft
An application might specify characters, an editorial brief might specify words, and a content field might simply stop accepting input after a certain amount of text. Those rules are not interchangeable. A sentence with only a few words can still contain many characters when the words are long or punctuation and spaces are included.

Word count

After editing, check more than the total. Make sure pronouns still have clear references, subject and verb still agree, and essential details such as dates, exceptions, conditions, or next actions have not disappeared. A compliant length is only useful if the shortened text remains accurate.
