JPG vs PNG vs WebP: Which Image Format Should You Use?
The right format depends on what the pixels represent and where the file is going. A portrait, a software screenshot, and a transparent logo should not be forced through the same rule just because one extension is newer.

- Photographs: JPG for dependable compatibility; WebP as an efficient web option after comparing the actual result.
- Screenshots: usually PNG for crisp text and interface edges; lossless WebP can be worth testing for web delivery.

Lossy, Lossless, and Alpha Transparency
Lossy compression reduces size by discarding some information the encoder expects viewers to notice less. Repeated lossy saves can compound artifacts. Lossless compression reconstructs the stored pixel values exactly after decoding; “lossless” does not mean the file will be small.
An alpha channel stores how opaque each pixel should be in addition to its color. It lets a logo or product cutout sit over different backgrounds with smooth, partially transparent edges. JPG has no alpha channel. PNG and WebP can carry one.
What Each Format Is Good At
JPG: photographs and easy handoffs
JPG, also called JPEG, is a lossy format that works well with the gradual color and tone changes in photographs. Lower quality settings create smaller files, but aggressive settings introduce blocks, halos, and smudged detail around edges. It cannot preserve transparency, but support across editors, devices, and publishing systems is exceptionally broad.
PNG: sharp graphics and transparency
PNG is lossless and well suited to screenshots with text, diagrams, icons, flat-color artwork, and transparent backgrounds. It may become much larger than JPG or lossy WebP for a detailed photograph because it is trying to preserve every stored pixel. That does not make PNG universally “higher quality” for every use; it can simply be an inefficient match for the content.
WebP: flexible web delivery
WebP supports lossy and lossless encoding, alpha transparency, and animation. It can serve both photographs and transparent web graphics efficiently. It is not guaranteed to beat JPG for every image: source content, encoder, and quality settings all affect the outcome. Older desktop apps or content systems may still reject it.

Choosing by Use Case
Website photography
Export WebP and JPG at the same pixel dimensions and compare visible quality at a similar level. Choose using the measured files, not the extension alone. For a huge camera original, resize the image dimensions before relying on a very low quality setting.
Screenshots and documentation
PNG keeps interface labels, thin rules, and flat-color regions crisp. A video frame or game screenshot with complex color can favor WebP instead. Always inspect text at the size readers will actually see it.
Logos, icons, and cutouts
Avoid JPG if the background must remain transparent. PNG is a dependable handoff; lossless WebP may be smaller for web use. Preserve the vector source separately for print, editing, and arbitrary scaling.
Social media and third-party portals
A platform may reject certain formats and will often recompress accepted images. Check its current file type, dimension, and size requirements first. JPG for photos and PNG for transparent artwork are safer when the destination is uncertain.
What Conversion Can—and Cannot—Do
Converting JPG to PNG does not recreate details discarded by the original JPEG encoding. It places the existing pixels in a lossless file and may increase the size. When you convert PNG to JPG, transparent pixels must be composited against a solid background; inspect which color the converter uses.
For web publishing, JPG to WebP and PNG to WebP can produce useful delivery files. Re-encoding an already lossy JPG into lossy WebP can introduce another generation of loss, so export from a high-quality master whenever possible.
If a destination cannot read WebP, use WebP to JPG for an opaque photograph or WebP to PNG to retain transparency. Renaming the extension is not conversion; the image data must be decoded and encoded in the target format.
Format Is Only One Part of Web Performance
Serving a 4,000-pixel-wide image in an 800-pixel slot can erase the benefit of a modern format. Suitable dimensions, responsive image sources, an appropriate quality setting, and deferred loading for off-screen content work together.
